Tagged

I've been tagged by the Two-Headed Blog.
The rules are:

  • The rules of the game get posted at the beginning.
  • Each player answers the questions about himself or herself.
  • At the end of the post, the player then tags people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know they’ve been tagged and asking them to read your blog.
Here we go …

Ten years ago, I was:
  • Finishing my first year of college at OU.
  • Selling office supplies for the summer. Worst job I ever had.
  • Also, the summer of '98 was the hottest I ever remember. And if you don't believe me, the Oklahoma Climatological Survey says, "The summers of 1998 through 2001 were all above normal, with 1998 ranking as the 8th warmest in state history. The Oklahoma Mesonet had well over 4000 reports of triple-digit temperatures during 1998. ... Oklahoma City was at or above the 100-degree mark 40 times, nearing the hallowed 1980 benchmark of 50.
5 Things on Today’s “To Do” List:
(or at least for the next 24 hours)
  • Finish my 10-hour shift at the newspaper.
  • Spend some time with Hayley at my house.
  • Pack my bag.
  • Play in The Oklahoman's company golf tournament (my team almost always finishes last ... I think other people are cheating).
  • Hit the road for a guys trip in Dallas (Rangers game and Radiohead concert)
3 Bad Habits:
  • Room and bathroom are a mess.
  • I sometimes skip important events (i.e., a bachelor party) without notifying anyone.
  • I am constantly late to work (but I stay late, too!).
5 Places I’ve Lived:
  • Oklahoma City.
  • Norman, OK.
  • Edmond, OK.
  • Washington, D.C.
  • that's it!
5 Jobs I’ve Held:
  • Bank teller
  • Office supply clerk
  • Classified ad salesman
  • Newspaper copy editor
  • Attorney

Anticipating new releases

Lots of good music is ahead, starting in two days:

May 13: Death Cab for Cutie, "Narrow Stairs"
I've heard a few songs of this album so far. "I Will Possess Your Heart" is way too long for my shrinking attention span, but fortunately there is a radio edit. "Cath" is a great song.

May 13: Old 97's, "Blame It On Gravity"
I haven't paid as much attention to this band lately as I should. I will start to correct that situation by buying this record.

June 10: My Morning Jacket, "Evil Urges"
Their sets at SXSW kicked ass. Their performances on SNL kicked ass. This album will kick ass as well.

June 17: Coldplay, "Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends"
That title is a mouthful. What I've heard so far (the title track and "Violet Hill") has been pretty solid. I'll probably be seeing them again at the Ford Center this summer.

July 22: Dr. Dog, "Fate"
I fell in love with this band in '07 and I can't wait to hear what's next.

What am I missing?

Look-alikes: Morgan Ensberg and Bob Stoops

Watching the Yankees on the MLB.tv, I'm reminded of how much ex-Astro Morgan Ensberg looks like OU football coach Bob Stoops.

New Digs in D.C.

Growing up, I often said that Washington, D.C., was ready for baseball again. It was tragic, I would say, that the national pastime was not played in the nation's capital. Wouldn't it be great to look over the outfield seats and see the U.S. Capitol glowing bright against a black sky? Sure, baseball had failed time and time again in the District, but that was before I was born and things had changed considerably. There were more people and more money in the metro area. Lobbyists alone could find a way to fill luxury boxes, and the common fan could ride the subway to the cheap seats. And yes, I even passionately made these points a time or two on local sports radio.

Well, the team arrived via Montreal in 2005, but had to shack up for a few years in run-down RFK Stadium. Tonight, the Nats finally arrived on the national stage, Opening Night on ESPN, with the Prez throwing out the first pitch to open Nationals Park and the home team taking on Chipper Jones and the Atlanta Braves. Announcers, players and the First Fan himself had nothing but raves for the new yard. And there it was, the Capitol dome bright and beautiful. What's more American than that?

The best part? The park was christened in style, with a Ryan Zimmerman walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth. What a great start to the baseball season!

Is that Old Glory in your pants, or are you happy to see me?

Is stuffing a flag down the pants a common form of protest?

Marine won't draw penalty for flag fight:

Modisette, of Shawnee, was arrested Friday afternoon on a complaint of interfering with official police process. He told The Oklahoman he was reacting to a war protester who was stuffing an American flag down her pants.
